Washington Nationals add utility option in Brock Holt

The Washington Nationals have added a badly needed depth piece in Brock Holt.

As the Washington Nationals look to pull themselves back into the playoff picture, they find themselves in dire need of infield depth. Prospect Carter Kieboom was sent to the alternate training site after failing to make an impact at the major league level this year. Eric Thames has not looked like the slugger he was early in his days with the Brewers. Wilmer Difo has not exactly been productive when given the chance. Changes need to be made.

At least one change is coming. The Nationals have agreed to terms with Brock Holt, adding that needed depth.

Holt will not be tethered to the infield either. According to Jesse Dougherty, manager Dave Martinez told Holt to be ready to play everywhere on the diamond.

The Nationals are hoping to strike gold with this move. Holt had not exactly performed well during his brief stint in Milwaukee, In his 36 plate appearances, he had produced a .100/.222/.100 batting line with four walks and nine strikeouts before being designated for assignment and subsequently released.

However, the super utility man had been much better. Over the previous six seasons, Holt had put together a .272/.342/.378 batting line, hitting 104 doubles and 23 homers while showing excellent plate discipline, even earning an All Star nod in 2015. More importantly, he had displayed respectable defense at every infield and outfield position.

With several players on the Nationals underperforming, Holt will get his chance to resurrect his career. Perhaps playing nearly every day, and in that utility role, will make a difference. With the Nationals lack of depth, he is a worthwhile gamble to take.

The Washington Nationals have signed Brock Holt, with the idea that he will be playing everywhere. Given his track record, this move could pay off in impressive fashion.
