San Diego Padres: approaching the trade deadline with right mindset
The San Diego Padres have the right idea approaching deals this year.
With the trading deadline just hours away, teams are scrambling for late minute additions to try to bolster their chances of sneaking into the playoffs. The San Diego Padres have made a handful of moves and may not be done.
Rather than diving into the market and making a huge splash, the Padres have pieced together several assets to help their chances of securing a postseason bid. Currently sitting in second place of the National League West, the Padres may not be content with the three moves they have already made.
The Padres have been the most active team thus far and they have improved in a variety of areas. First, they brought in Trevor Rosenthal to strengthen the bullpen. Next, they added Mitch Moreland to the bench. Finally, they brought in Jason Castro to help the catching corps.

Three different areas of the team were addressed in a couple of days, and they are in strong negotiations to add a starting pitcher to the mix as well.
San Diego hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2006 and this year’s team is feeling the sense of urgency. A good core of hitters led by the youthful Fernando Tatis Jr. has the Padres right where they want to be.
By acquiring so many pieces, the Padres are sending the message they won’t stand by idly and let the Los Angels Dodgers win another division title. The Padres are going to fight tooth and nail to dethrone them.
If they are unable to take over the Dodgers, the Padres have a great shot to get in, in the expanded playoff format, and are setting themselves up to compete with any team in the National League.
Props to the Padres brass for trusting in the team, and bringing in the reinforcements to push them over the top.
