The trade deadline is over, and their catcher spot has been overhauled, but the San Diego Padres could still make moves behind the plate.

The San Diego Padres were aggressive in improving their roster, but no other position received the attention that the catcher spot did. Both Jason Castro and Austin Nola were brought in, replacing the disappointing duo of Austin Hedges and Francisco Mejia. Luis Torrens, another catcher, was sent to Seattle as part of the deal for Nola.

Even with that complete overhaul, the Padres may not be done. According to Dennis Lin, the Padres are also considering bringing prospect Luis Campusano to the majors.

Such a move would free up Nola to be a super utility option for the Padres. In addition to his time behind the plate, he has seen action at first, second, and third in the majors, and spent another 430 games at short in the minors.

Campusano, meanwhile, was considered to be the fourth best catching prospect in baseball by MLB.com. A consensus top 100 prospect in the game, he has drawn rave reviews for his ability to hit the ball to all fields while consistently making hard contact and his approach at the plate.

Campusano had a breakout campaign last year. He produced a .325/.396/.509 batting line with 15 homers and 31 doubles in his 487 plate appearances in the California League, drawing 52 walks with only 57 strikeouts. However, he has yet to make an appearance above high-A ball, making a possible promotion to the majors quite the leap of faith.

However, the Padres may find that this gamble pays off. Campusano has reportedly been hammering the ball at the Padres’ alternate training site. This continued on Wednesday, when he hit two home runs with general manager A.J. Preller in attendance. That is certainly a great way to make one’s case.
