Alex Rodriguez is still holding out hope that he will end up being the new owner of the New York Mets, no matter how unrealistic it may be.

The sale of the New York Mets is essentially done. Steve Cohen has entered exclusive negotiations with the Wilpon Family to take over a majority ownership of the franchise, something that seemed to have been a done deal back in February. However, two weeks have passed since those negotiations began without any indication as to when a deal will be done.

As those negotiations drag on, they are bringing hope to one prospective buyer. Alex Rodriguez is still holding out hope that the ownership group fronted by he and Jennifer Lopez can win out, as they believe that they have the best offer and can offer the most to the fans.

This optimism is rather amusing, especially given that Rodriguez had previously claimed that the sales process was “fixed.” These beliefs are based on the idea that Cohen saw the bids, the Rodriguez was not given a chance to match Cohen’s offer, and that he has been unable to get in contact with Fred Wilpon.

But now hope springs eternal. The fact that the deal has not been signed is a sign for optimism. No news is good news for Rodriguez and company. As remote as the possibility may be, they still have a chance until that contract is signed.

Rodriguez also shared some details as to their plans for the Mets. His ownership group plans to raise payroll to the $225 million area as they would spend on the players that the team needed to compete for a championship. If that World Series title does not happen within the first decade of ownership, he and Lopez have guaranteed a $100 million donation to various New York charities.

It is easy to see that Rodriguez is trying to play on the court of public perception. By announcing his plans, he is hoping to put some pressure on Wilpon to either make the deal with Cohen or to look elsewhere. And if that happens, Rodriguez and company will be waiting.
