Toronto Blue Jays: The best team in New York

As strange as it may sound, the best team in New York right now happens to be the Toronto Blue Jays.

In a normal year, the battle for baseball supremacy in New York comes down to the Yankees and Mets. This has not been much of a battle of late – the Yankees have been a perennial playoff team while the Mets have been mired in mediocrity.

2020 is not a normal year. The Yankees and Mets have some company in their battle for New York – the Toronto Blue Jays. Kicked out of Canada due to the ongoing pandemic, the Blue Jays have been forced to play their games in Buffalo, making this a three way battle for state supremacy.

At the start of the year, this was not expected to be much of a battle. The Yankees were considered favorites to emerge out of the American League and head to the World Series. The Mets, meanwhile, were considered playoff contenders. Buffalo/Toronto? It was another step forward in the rebuild, but a .500 season would be considered an accomplishment.

But this is why the season is played on the diamond and not on paper. The Yankees got out to a hot start, but have scuffled of late, losing seven of their last eight games to fall to .500. Their cross-city rivals, the Mets, have had their own disappointing season and sit below .500.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball. They sit at 24-18, the sixth seed in the AL, and would be on the cusp of the postseason in a normal year. Buffalo, which has not had a major league team since the short-lived Federal League ended in 1915, finds itself atop the baseball universe.

There is still a long way to go before Buffalo hosts its first ever MLB playoff game. The Blue Jays have to fend off the Yankees, and a slew of other teams, for a spot in the postseason. Then, they would need to get past the first round before a postseason game could be played in northern New York.

But it is possible that this could happen, especially as the Toronto Blue Jays are currently the best team in New York.
