New York Mets: The Jed Lowrie disaster continues to amaze
In theory, the New York Mets are able to activate Jed Lowrie from the Injured List. You know, in theory.
At the time, the New York Mets decision to sign Jed Lowrie seemed like a good idea. He was a solid infielder who could provide depth at second and third, two areas that were question marks heading into the 2019 campaign. Instead, Lowrie has reverted to his oft-injured ways, to the point where he has barely been on the diamond at all since signing that contract.
In theory, the Mets would have been able to get him back last week. But there is just one small problem with that…
So much for seeing Lowrie play for the Mets this year. And, considering that he is 36 years old and has appeared in a total of nine games since the start of 2019, it may be possible that his time on the diamond is at an end.
It was a fruitful partnership for Lowrie. He signed a two year deal worth $20 million prior to the 2019 campaign, a reasonable contract at the time. Lowrie had back to back seasons where he appeared in over 150 games, producing a solid .272/.356/.448 batting line with 37 homers and 86 doubles.
However, this was a disaster for the Mets. Lowrie had just eight plate appearances in those nine games, drawing a walk and striking out four times. He was not healthy enough to appear in the field, just serving as a pinch hitter during that time.
Those eight plate appearances are likely to be all that the Mets get out of the $20 million they had spent. No one seems to know what Lowrie is doing at this point, whether or not he is engaging in baseball activities, or if he is just sitting on his couch drinking a cold brew while watching the game. The only thing that seems to be certain is that he has played his final game with the franchise.
The Jed Lowrie Era is likely over. We would know for certain, but the New York Mets have no idea what is going on when it comes to the oft-injured infielder.
