The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres game was postponed minutes before first pitch Friday night due to a Giants positive COVID-19 test.

The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres were just minutes away from starting the second of a four-game set Friday night. But the players never took the field.

They sat around in the dugout as the time of first pitch passed by. The fans were given no explanation as to why. They sat around refreshing Twitter in confusion, fearing the worst.

And the worst is what they got.

Shortly after the game was supposed to begin, it was announced that a member of the Giants organization had tested positive for Covid-19. As such, both Friday and Saturday’s games have been postponed.

Obviously, the situation in and of itself is frightening. Covid-19 is a legitimate threat, even to athletes in peak physical condition. Hopefully, the infected party hasn’t infected anybody else and makes a full recovery.

But logistically, this is an absolute nightmare scenario this late in the season. With regards to the Padres and the Giants, they match up one more time this year so scheduling these postponed games won’t be an issue.

But we’ve seen multiple series be wiped out by COVID postponements. The Padres have a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers starting on Monday. What if one of their players tests positive this weekend?

That series could very well be canceled as well with almost no time to make it up. This late in the season, postponements could result in the playoff picture being decided by win percentage because teams haven’t played the same number of games.

But whatever happens, is out of the hands of the fans. All we can do is wait for Major League Baseball to announce the schedule update. Hopefully, the virus has not spread too far in the clubhouse and the damage can be minimized.
