Just like virtually every other baseball fan, former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones has had enough of Angel Hernandez having a job.
When former major league players speak about the game, people listen. This is especially true when it comes to some of the better players of their time, the Hall of Famers that rarely spoke out against the umpires during their playing days. Former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones is one of those players.
Since he has retired, Angel Hernandez has been a target of Jones’ ire. That continued early Wednesday morning when he essentially confirmed Indians’ broadcaster Tom Hamilton’s thoughts on everyone’s least favorite umpire.

This is not the first time Jones has taken shots at Hernandez. He let loose regarding some of Hernandez’s calls back in 2013 shortly after retiring, urging fans to boycott any games worked by Hernandez. In 2018, he retweeted Paul LoDuca’s question as to how Hernandez managed to get a playoff game, asking if he could retweet the message 100 times to get the point across.
It is not as though these are just isolated games. Hernandez is consistently viewed as one of the worst umpires in the game by the players. His incompetence speaks for itself, just as it did in that playoff game LoDuca referenced when three of Hernandez’s calls were overturned in a three inning span.
And yet, Hernandez continues to be employed. Thanks to the Umpire’s Union, his grotesque incompetence is irrelevant. Instead, the players are stuck dealing with his inability to call a game correctly, and his own sense of self-importance.
Even worse, Hernandez cannot see his mistakes. He has an ongoing lawsuit against Major League Baseball claiming discrimination as to why he had not been a crew chief nor been a part of a playoff game. The problem is that those roles are typically decided based on merit – Hernandez does not deserve to be near a Little League game, let alone anything involving the postseason.
Those traits make it easy to detest Angel Hernandez. Former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones remains right beside us in questioning why Hernandez continues to have a job.
