The Detroit Tigers need a new manager. Based on a statement by general manager Al Avila, a pair of big names are a part of that hunt.

The retirement of Ron Gardenhire was not necessarily a surprise. He was departing at the end of the season anyway, giving the Detroit Tigers a head’s up that a new manager would be needed. However, his departure prior to the end of the season gave the search an added impetus.

Avila had indicated that his search would cast a very wide net. On Friday, he expanded upon that statement a bit.

AJ Hinch had previously been included on the list of presumed candidates. He had been a part of the Astros turnaround, regardless of how tainted that has become, and did win a World Series. Hinch helped finish the Astros rebuild, making them into a powerhouse during his three seasons there.

Like Hinch, Alex Cora did a bang up job with the Red Sox. He took a talented roster that had disappointed in the postseason and guided them back to the World Series, winning the championship in his first time at the helm. Cora then guided an injury plagued roster to finish above .500 season in 2019, before losing his job as part of the AstroGate fallout.

But both former managers are set to return soon. Their suspensions are over once the World Series comes to an end, allowing them to return. Both managers have impressive resumes, and based on the interest surrounding their names, the asterisk attached to their time with the Astros seemingly does not matter.

The Tigers would be an enviable destination for either Hinch or Cora, or any other manager for that matter. They have a quartet of pitching prospects that are the envy of baseball, and could prove to be a formidable rotation for much of the decade. Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene could be a solid 1-2 punch in the middle of the lineup soon. Detroit is a team on the upswing.
