Miami Marlins will bring Starling Marte back for 2021
According to reports, the Miami Marlins plan on exercising Starling Marte’s option, bringing him back for the 2021 campaign.
The Miami Marlins found themselves in an unusual situation at the trade deadline this year – they were actually in contention for a playoff berth. With an eye towards reaching the postseason in 2020, the Marlins made a blockbuster move, acquiring Starling Marte for a package of players that included pitcher Caleb Smith. Given the cost to bring Marte on board, it was thought that he was regarded as more than a rental player.
Those thoughts have proven to be correct. The Marlins have stated that they plan on exercising Marte’s $12.5 million option for 2021.
Marte, in an interesting statistical anomaly, led the league in games played this year. Despite the 60 game schedule, he made 61 appearances due to the trade and the Marlins need to make up games due to their positive COVID tests early in the season.
He posted a solid campaign between his time with the Diamondbacks and the Marlins. In his 250 plate appearances, Marte posted a .281/.340/.430 batting line, hitting 14 doubles and six homers while stealing ten bases. Marte is also a former Gold Glove outfielder with the ability to play either left or center, giving the Marlins some flexibility in constructing their outfield.
However, he did struggle during his time in Miami. In 112 plate appearances, he produced a .245/.286/.415 batting line. While he did show some pop, with six doubles and four homers, the Marlins were hoping for more when he was acquired.
Even with those struggles, picking up this option was an easy decision to make. Marte changes the complexion of the Marlins lineup, adding a solid all around player who could conceivably slot in anywhere in the batting order. He can also serve as a veteran leader on the young squad, someone that can help guide these players as the Marlins look to build a sustainable contender.
The Miami Marlins are set to pick up Starling Marte’s option for 2021. As they have their sights set on another postseason appearance, that was an easy decision to make.
