San Diego Padres catching prospect Luis Campusano has been arrested on felony marijuana possession charges while home in Georgia.

It’s been less than two weeks since the San Diego Padres played their final game of the 2020 Major League Baseball season, but the Padres news cycle has been anything but quiet since.

On Tuesday afternoon, per a report from Kevin Acee at The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Padres catching prospect Luis Campusano was arrested in Grovetown, Georgia on suspicion of felony marijuana possession.

Campusano has since been released on bond.

light. More Padres. Myers trade rumors can be put to rest

According to the report, Campusano allegedly had 79 grams of marijuana in his car which is enough for a felony charge in the state of Georgia and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

There are a number of issues surrounding this case that are troubling, from vast differences in marijuana laws from state-to-state (possession of 79 grams in California is a misdemeanor charge), to the bigger debate surrounding the legalization of marijuana, and beyond.

But without any more details surrounding Campusano’s case and the fact that this is a baseball blog, we will leave the above topics to be discussed by those with more expertise.

Regardless of public opinion, Campusano has been reportedly charged in a state with tighter laws concerning the possession of marijuana, which may or may not have an impact on his baseball career with the San Diego Padres.

Luis Campusano currently ranks fourth on MLB Pipeline’s list of Top 30 San Diego Padres prospects and the third-best catching prospect in all of baseball behind Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles and Joey Bart of the San Francisco Giants.

Campusano made his MLB debut this season, appearing in one game for the Padres and going 1-4 with a home run. One day later, he found himself on the Injured List with a sprained wrist. He would see just one at-bat during the playoffs.

With no experience above High-A before the 2020 season, Campusano is likely to see a bit more seasoning in the minor leagues in 2021 before making his return to the major leagues. With Austin Nola now in town and the Padres still likely to give Francisco Mejia another opportunity to prove himself, the Friars can keep Campusano down in the minor leagues a bit longer.

That is if he avoids any serious legal trouble.

Since the Padres were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, outfielder Tommy Pham was stabbed outside of a strip club and pitcher Luis Perdomo has already been ruled out of the 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

So much for a quiet offseason for the San Diego Padres.
