Chicago White Sox: Tony La Russa named next manager
Tony La Russa was announced as the next Chicago White Sox Manager on Thursday.
According to an official team announcement, the Chicago White Sox have named Tony La Russa as the 30th manager in club history.
The 76-year-old La Russa has been rumored as the top candidate to replace Rick Renteria, who was let go following the conclusion of the 2020 season.
La Russa is a three-time World Series champion best known for his 16-year career managing the St. Louis Cardinals. During his time in St. Louis, La Russa guided the Cardinals to titles in 2006 and 2011.
Following the World Series run in 2011, La Russa became the first manager in league history to retire after winning a championship.
The 2013 Hall of Fame inductee owns a 2,728-2,365 managerial record throughout his 33 years of experience. Those 2,728 wins are good for the third-most managerial wins in league history.
Chicago did not release the length of La Russa’s contract. This move is seen as a win-now opportunity. The White Sox finished with a 35-25 record, securing the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 2008. Chicago is loaded with a mix of veteran and young talent, with one of the better lineups in baseball.
La Russa has not managed since 2011, however, has held front office roles with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Angels.
Notably, Tony La Russa is no stranger to the Chicago White Sox organization. He managed Chicago from 1979 to 1986, compiling a 522-510 record.
