The New York Mets are looking to transform themselves into a championship caliber team. A part of that push appears to involve pursuing Trevor Bauer.

As the New York Mets look to transform themselves into a championship caliber team, they have several holes on the roster that need to be filled. Most notably, the entire pitching staff needs to be overhauled. The Mets have a trio of solid starters, which will be even better when Noah Syndergaard returns to the mound, but they could use another arm.

A part of that quest for another arm in the rotation appears to include the top starter in free agency. Mets team president Sandy Alderson did not shy away from his thoughts about Trevor Bauer, saying that his personality would be a great fit in New York.

Bauer, for his part, was flattered by the answer. He stated that it was “refreshing” to hear someone speak that way about him, especially given the past narrative that he would not be able to handle a larger market like New York. Likewise, Bauer appreciated Alderson’s realization that baseball is an entertainment business, something that he has continually stated as well.

Virtually any team would want to have Bauer as a part of their rotation. He took a major step towards stardom this season, winning the NL Cy Young award while posting a league leading 1.73 ERA and a 0.795 WHiP. In his 73 innings, he struck out exactly 100 batters while issuing only 17 walks.

It certainly appears as though there is a new day dawning for the Mets. Steve Cohen has stated his expectation that the team will be a championship level ballclub, and that they will be contending for the World Series. That faith in his team, and his desire to win, helped convince Marcus Stroman to take the qualifying offer.

That desire to win, and the willingness to spend the money needed to do so, could also attract other players. Bauer could be the perfect piece to show how serious the Mets are to that commitment to win, as they would land the top pitcher on the market.

The New York Mets are making certain that Trevor Bauer knows he would be welcome. This commitment to winning could lead to an impressive free agent haul, with Bauer as the possible headliner.
