Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays, will be housing the WWE for the next few months until the baseball season starts up again.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, baseball stadiums around the country are silent. While baseball is not going to be back for months, there are usually other events taking place that provide a revenue stream during the offseason. That will not be the case this year, as lockdowns and social distancing rules have put those gatherings aside.

However, that will not be the case for the Tampa Bay Rays and Tropicana Field. The WWE was in need of a new venue as their lease for the Amway Center in Orlando had expired. With the Magic and ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears set to begin using the center again in December, the WWE needed to find someplace nearby.

That answer was Tropicana Field. From the beginning of December until March, the Trop will be known as The Thunderdome, as the WWE will be hosting their events there.

While this does not completely make up for the shortened season and the lack of revenue due to fans not being allowed at games, it does make a dent. The impact upon the Rays will not be as bad as it had been, although this is not likely to change much for the team going forward.

The Rays were not a team that was going to be spending large amounts of money during normal circumstances. However, due to the losses caused by the 2020 season, and the uncertainty surrounding whether or not fans will be allowed in the stadiums next season, the Rays were likely to have an interesting offseason filled with trade rumors.

It is possible that this could have enough of an impact to limit the cost reductions that the Rays would undertake. It is also possible that by having the WWE as a tenant, some trades will not need to be made. And with an added spotlight on the Trop, the Rays may be able to get another boost once the season rolls around.
