New York Mets President Sandy Alderson knows the Mets don’t have the organization depth to make big trades right now. Luckily, their owner is pretty rich.

When Steve Cohen finalized his purchase of the New York Mets, fans instantly expected him to spend big on free agents. That hope was quickly dashed when fans learned the Mets would be primarily focused on trades.

But now, President Sandy Alderson has ignited those hopes again, stating explicitly that the Mets will be active in the free agent market because they don’t really have any big trade chips.

And this is exactly what the Mets need. 2020 is expected to be a slow free agent market. Teams are reporting huge financial losses due to the lack of fan attendance this season. As such, a lot of those teams aren’t willing to break open the piggy bank to improve their teams. In the Philadelphia Phillies case, they won’t even break open their piggy bank to retain one of the best catchers in baseball.

So in a free agent market where the competition for players will be at an all time low, an owner with the resources that Cohen has can make an absolute killing. He’ll still have to bid big on the top players in the league, but he won’t be getting into too many bidding wars for them. And he can round out his roster with some high quality players taking one year deals to try the market again in 2021.

In one off-season, the Mets could go from gigantic disappointment to World Series contender, all because of one man. The culture of New York baseball has changed. The Mets are no longer a big city team acting like a penny pinching organization. Cohen is bringing in the best minds he can to spend his absurd amount of wealth on giving Mets fans the team that they deserve.

Dominating the 2020 free agent market is just the start for the New York Mets’ new regime.
