Russell Wilson has not played baseball in years, but he still says that he is a better player than New York Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow.

Tim Tebow has been a bit of a punchline over the years. The New York Mets minor leaguer has been ridiculed for his efforts to become a major leaguer, with those inside the game outright wondering if he would be getting these chances if not for his name. He has not exactly quieted those doubters with his exploits on the diamond either.

That is not to say that Tebow did not have his moments. He was an Eastern League All Star in 2018 before a broken hand ended his season. And he has occasionally displayed flashes of competence, although those have been few and far between since that he first broke his hand.

Tebow’s detractors are not just coming from the majors. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson stated in an interview that he is a better player than the Mets outfielder, although he notes that he has not actually seen Tebow play.

He really is not missing much. Tebow has not exactly covered himself in glory on the diamond, producing a .223/.299/.338 batting line with 18 homers and 48 doubles in 1048 plate appearances, drawing 85 walks while striking out 327 strikeouts. It is difficult to see him as an actual prospect, but the Mets are determined to bring Tebow back in 2021.

Wilson, meanwhile, was an actual prospect during his baseball playing days. He had been drafted originally by the Baltimore Orioles in the 41st round of the 2007 MLB Draft, but would have gone higher if not for his commitment to NC State. He was later selected in the fourth round of the draft by the Rockies, spending two years in their system before heading to the NFL.

Although his overall numbers may not indicate it, Wilson was a viable minor league prospect. He produced a .229/.354/.356 batting line in 379 plate appearances, hitting five homers, nine doubles, and eight triples while stealing 19 bases. Wilson was also solid defensively, making only seven errors in 415 total chances at second.

Russell Wilson says that he is a better baseball player than New York Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow. Even at this stage of their careers, he may be correct.
