The St. Louis Cardinals and Yadier Molina are both interested in a reunion, but only on their terms.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Yadier Molina appear to be at an impasse. Molina wants a two year contract, and is desiring at least $10 million per season. The Cardinals, meanwhile, do not appear to have any interest in Molina at that price point.

Meanwhile, teams are interested in Molina’s services. At least four other teams have inquired about the long time Cardinals’ catcher this offseason, although the Mets have since signed James McCann and would have seemingly removed themselves from the running. It would seem as though Molina would not be returning to St. Louis.

But that may not be the case after all. Molina still wants to be in St. Louis, as a source reportedly said that “is where he wants to be.” The Cardinals also want Molina back, as they view both he and Adam Wainwright as ‘legacy players’ for the organization.

As the same sources say that Molina would sign quickly if the Cardinals made an offer that was even close to his price tag. He is waiting out the process, hoping that St. Louis will come back with an offer that can match his desire.

This also likely explains why Molina has yet to sign. He does have several attractive destinations, with the Padres and Yankees having been mentioned as suitors. Both teams would appear to be postseason contenders for the 2021 season, giving him a chance at one more title before retirement.

But that is not necessarily what Molina wants. While he wants to get paid what he feels is an appropriate sum, he wants to return to the only franchise he has ever been a part of. And the Cardinals want him back.
