New York Mets: The ongoing outfield question
The New York Mets are considered one of the favorites to land George Springer, but who would they remove from their outfield equation?
The New York Mets, as currently constructed, have a solid outfield. Michael Conforto holds down right field, and Brandon Nimmo has become an asset in center. Left field was held down by a combination of Jeff McNiel, Dominic Smith, and J.D. Davis, with all three providing excellent production.
That outfield mix may change in 2021. With Robinson Cano‘s suspension, the Mets may move McNeil to second. As Davis is the primary third baseman, this would theoretically leave Smith to have a starting role of his own.
Despite their solid outfield, the Mets are one of the favorites to land George Springer. They have reportedly made him their priority this offseason, looking to add another potent bat to an already impressive lineup.
While Springer would be an upgrade, he would also create a logjam in the outfield. Conforto’s job is safe, especially as the Mets have reportedly been interested in extending him as well. However, Conforto is a free agent after this season, which could lead to another opening down the line.
Chances are, either Smith or Nimmo will be squeezed out of the lineup should the Mets land Springer. Nimmo has been New York’s fourth outfielder in previous years, and still received plenty of time at all three outfield spots last year. Smith could find himself in more of a utility role, splitting time between backing up in the outfield, first base, and getting some at bats as the designated hitter during interleague play.
It is also possible that one of those outfielders would be part of a trade package. The Indians have stated that they want the Mets involved in any potential Francisco Lindor trade talks, and are in desperate need of outfielders. Although neither Nimmo nor Smith would be enough to bring in a player such as Lindor, they could get the conversation going.
The New York Mets outfield will have more questions should they land George Springer. That move may simply be a precursor for other acquisitions to strengthen the roster.
