Naturally, Curt Schilling had a reaction to the events in the nation’s capital on Wednesday, as he continues to prove that he is a reprehensible human being.
The nation watched with horror on Wednesday as an attempted insurrection occurred against the U.S. government. Spurred on by dubious claims and whipped into a lather of hate and violence, they stormed the Capitol Building, overwhelming a woefully inept police force in their attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential Election. And yet, there are some who steadfastly believe that this was the correct course of action to take.
Count former pitcher Curt Schilling among those who refuse to acknowledge the treasonous nature of such actions. In fact, he posted on Parler to defend those actions.
Schilling had been silent for some time. He had previously admitted that he did not think that he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame due to his political beliefs and previous statements. After all, this is the same person that thought that calling for the lynching of journalists was somehow acceptable and would not factor into his being enshrined in Cooperstown by … journalists.
As it is, Schilling could be considered a borderline candidate for the Hall of Fame. He posted a solid 216-146 record with a 3.46 ERA and a 1.137 WHiP, striking out 3116 batters with 711 walks over his 3261 innings. Schilling was a six-time All-Star, won three World Series, and made an indelible mark on Red Sox history with the infamous Bloody Sock.
But there is more to Schilling than just his performance on the mound and his postseason heroics. His life after his playing days has been a series of scandals and questionable statements. He conned the state of Rhode Island out of $75 million for his failed video game company and was later sued by the state. His views led to his being suspended in 2015 by ESPN, as he retweeted a post comparing Muslims and Nazis. The network later fired him in 2016 for his remarks about transgender people.
Schilling most recently came under fire due to his presence on the advisory board of a group called “We Build The Wall,” which allegedly defrauded investors while claiming that they would build the border wall. While four people were arrested and charged with fraud relating to the fundraising group, Schilling was not amongst those facing charges.
This is just another for Schilling. His continued barrage of ridiculous and hate-fueled rantings have continued, albeit on a different platform. The only difference is that this time, there is true outrage to his sentiments, with some even suggesting that he be removed from the ballot entirely because of his most recent statement.
Frankly, no one should be surprised that Curt Schilling would advocate such a violent reaction to an election that did not go as he had hoped. It is entirely keeping with his character.
