New York Mets won’t replace Jared Porter immediately

The New York Mets sit in a unique position following news of the Jared Porter scandal. Porter, who operated as New York’s general manager for just 37 days, was fired Tuesday by new owner Steve Cohen.

The firing took place after news broke that Porter sent crude and harassing texts to a female journalist five years ago.

After announcing Porter’s termination, the Mets revealed some rather interesting news. Team President Sandy Alderson told reporters that the team had no plans on finding Porter’s replacement this year.

Fortunately, the Mets aren’t entering troubling waters. Cohen’s front office is full of experience, kicking off with Alderson himself. Alderson owns more than 20 years of MLB experience as a GM. He held this role with the Oakland Athletics from 1983-97 and then the Mets from 2011-18.

Not only is Alderson experienced, but he’s been quite successful in these roles, highlighted by New York’s World Series run in 2015.

Assistant GM Zack Scott will also continue to play a prominent role in the front office dynamic. Scott was hired in December after spending the last 17 years with the Boston Red Sox. During his time in Boston, Scott led the analytics and professional scouting departments, helping propel the Red Sox to four World Series titles in that time.

New York’s roster has already seen a big transformation thanks to its new ownership group. Just a few weeks ago, the Mets landed the biggest move of the offseason by acquiring Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco from the Cleveland Indians.

New York also signed free-agent catcher James McCann and reliever Trevor May. Prior to this, starting pitcher Marcus Stroman accepted the Mets’ $18.9 million qualifying offer, indirectly crediting the new management for his desire to stay.

Alderson and Scott are perfectly capable of addressing any further moves, so the Mets will sit tight with their current front office structure heading into next season.
