The San Diego Padres just will not stop in their quest to build a championship team. They have completely revamped their starting rotation while making upgrades throughout the lineup. At this point, the NL West appears destined to be a two team race, and the Padres arguably have the upper hand.

However, they are not content. The Padres have continued to build the depth on their roster as they have re-signed Jurickson Profar, adding him on a three year deal worth $21 million.

Jurickson Profar adds another depth piece for the San Diego Padres

After years of tantalizing with his potential, Profar finally had that breakout season we had been waiting for. He bounced back from a horrendous start to the 2020 campaign to post a career best .278/.343/.428 batting line in his 202 plate appearances, hitting seven homers and six doubles while stealing seven bases.

The question is – where will Profar play? He spent most of last season in left field, which may be his destination again in the upcoming campaign. Although Profar has extensive experience on the infield, the signing of Ha-Seong Kim would seemingly limit his opportunities there. His best options for playing time would seemingly be as an outfielder.

It is also worth questioning whether or not Profar can replicate his production from last season. He produced a .384/.407/.547 batting line with three homers, five doubles, and five steals over the final month of the season to bring his overall numbers to respectability.

Yet, it is a gamble the Padres had to take. If nothing else, his defensive versatility will give San Diego a valuable option on the bench, a player that can be slotted around the diamond. Should he be able to provide even league average production, he would be a worthwhile contributor.

The San Diego Padres are not going to rest until they have the best roster possible. Bringing Jurickson Profar back is a part of that plan.
