It is seemingly a matter of time before the Atlanta Braves team name comes under scrutiny. Both the Cleveland Indians and the Team Formerly Known as the Redskins have decided to change their names, realizing that they need to get with the times. While the Braves have not had the same level of scrutiny as either of those franchises, they will eventually find themselves in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, the Braves organization is dealing with a great deal of loss. Both Don Sutton and Hank Aaron have passed away recently. Aaron, in particular, made an incredible impact upon both the organization and the game despite enduring constant threats and racism.

The Atlanta Braves should honor Hank Aaron in their new name

The tributes to Aaron are everywhere when it comes to the Braves. There are statues in his honor. His number 44 has been retired, making certain that no one else will ever wear that number. But there is more that the Braves can do – they should change their name to the Hammers to honor Hank Aaron.

While it may seem strange to name a team for a specific player, there is precedent. Ironically, that precedent happens to be the Indians. There was a time when the franchise was known as the Naps in honor of star second baseman Nap Lajoie before their name was changed to the Indians when he departed. The popular myth is that the current name is also an homage to former player Lou Sockalexis, but that has been debunked.

There would be no question as to why the Braves had decided to take on this name. Aaron handled his career with grace and class, a consistently excellent player who took aim at one of the most hallowed records in the game. The all time RBI, extra base hits, and total bases record holder, Aaron is also in the top five in homers, hits, runs, and intentional walks.

This season will have the usual tributes for Aaron. The Braves will have a montage of his career accomplishments. Both Atlanta and Milwaukee will wear his number as a patch on their sleeves. But there is another way to ensure that Aaron will never be forgotten – to change the name of the franchise.

The Atlanta Braves will eventually need to find a new name. The Atlanta Hammers sounds pretty good.
