Toronto Blue Jays: Finalizing trade for Steven Matz
The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly finalizing a trade to acquire Steven Matz from the New York Mets. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the news on Wednesday night.
According to Passan, the Mets are expected to receive a trio of right-handed pitching prospects. These prospects include Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diáz, and Josh Winckowski.
Toronto Blue Jays: Reported deal to add Steve Matz
In December, Matz signed a one-year, $5.2 million deal with New York. This move prompts rumors that the Mets are in serious consideration for the league’s top free-agent pitcher, Trevor Bauer.
Matz, a 29-year-old left-hander, spent six seasons in New York while pitching to a career 31-41 record and 4.35 ERA. He suffered the worst year of his professional career in 2020, starting 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in five starts. This resulted in the loss of his starting rotation spot.
Toronto is in need of starting pitching depth behind ace Hyun Jin Ryu. The hope is that Matz will return to his career averages, providing the Blue Jays with this needed depth. Matz has pitched to a sub-4.00 ERA in three of his MLB seasons.
It’s been a busy offseason for Toronto, who recently came away with the blockbuster free-agent signing of George Springer. Toronto has also added Kirby Yates and Marcus Semien. In fact, this deal surrounds two of the busiest teams during the MLB offseason.
Both sides share these similar championship aspirations. For New York, it’s about adding that final piece in Bauer. According to sources, the Mets have made a formal offer for the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner. New York already landed superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor in a trade with the Cleveland Indians. This same deal brought over starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco. If New York is able to land Bauer, this team may be considered a favorite to win the World Series.
