It did not take long for Steve Cohen to become beloved. Just the fact that he was not a Wilpon and that he had purchased the New York Mets was a good start. The introductory press conference, where he vowed to return the franchise to its former glory and would turn the Mets into a major market franchise, went as well as possible.

From that moment, Cohen was a dynamo on Twitter. He was engaging the fanbase, making suggestions, and listening to ideas. The Mets upgraded their bullpen, signed James McCann to take over behind the plate, and acquired Francisco Lindor. Cohen was revered by the fanbase.

And then, the Gamestop fiasco happened. A group of people banded together to drive the price of the stock sky high, causing major losses for hedge funds. Cohen lost a significant amount of money in that time, began feuding with people on Twitter, and had lost all of the goodwill he had generated.

Cohen tried to get the conversation back in his favor. He attempted to get the talk going about the Mets again, but people were not having it. Despite his best efforts, Cohen continued to get ripped apart on Twitter. Finally, on Friday night, he seemingly deactivated his account, as it no longer exists.

This was supposed to be a new era for the Mets. It was supposed to be the time that the franchise returned to prominence, with an energetic owner and a competent front office. And for a few months, that was the case.

But nothing lasts forever, especially when it comes to good things and the New York Mets. All that goodwill has evaporated as Cohen has become yet another owner that is impossible to root for. While he may be a fan of the team, the rest of the fanbase has come to realize that he really is not one of them, and likely never was.
