Minnesota Twins: Scott Erickson charged in connection to fatal accident
There had been little news regarding former Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Erickson since his playing days ended. He spent two years as a minor league pitching coach and has been a game analyst for the Pac-12 Network since 2015. Otherwise, he has basically stayed out of the spotlight, enjoying his retirement in relative obscurity.
That changed on January 27. Erickson was charged with reckless driving in connection to a fatal hit and run accident where two boys, ages 8 and 11 years old, were struck and killed by a car driven by Rebecca Grossman.
Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Erickson’s role
According to the investigation into the accident, Erickson and Grossman had been racing when the fatal accident occurred. She has been charged with two felony counts of murder and vehicular manslaughter, as well as a felony count of hit and run driving resulting in death. Based on those charges, she faces anywhere from 34 years to life in prison.
The two boys were in the crosswalk when they were struck. Grossman had been reportedly driving at excessive speeds when the two children were hit, and continued for a quarter mile down the road before the engine in her vehicle gave out.
Erickson had been a solid pitcher before elbow and shoulder woes hindered his career. He posted a lifetime 142-136 record with a 4.59 ERA and a 1.462 WHiP in his 2360.2 innings, striking out 1252 batters with 865 walks. However, he only pitched a total of 347 innings after his age 31 season, the wear and tear on his arm ruining his effectiveness.
He did have some successful years early in his career. Erickson led the AL with 20 wins in his first full season in 1991, and had seven seasons with over 200 innings. He was a true workhorse in those days, a solid middle of the rotation arm that was a key part of the Twins and Orioles’ success in the 1990s.
Scott Erickson had faded into relative obscurity after his playing days. Now the former Minnesota Twins pitcher is back in the headlines, charged with reckless driving in connection with an accident that killed two young children.
