The Cincinnati Reds are still looking for infield depth. Despite the reports that they are discussing a contract with Jonathan Villar, the Reds still need to find depth in the middle of their infield. Jose Garcia is an intriguing option at short, and Mike Moustakas remains at second, but Cincinnati could use depth nonetheless, especially if Garcia is not ready.

On Sunday, the Reds made a move to address that depth. According to reports, they have signed Dee Strange-Gordon to a minor league contract.

Cincinnati Reds hoping to resurrect Dee Strange-Gordon

There was a time when Strange-Gordon was one of the more exciting players in the majors. A two time All Star, he led the league in steals three times, an excellent catalyst for the Dodgers and Marlins. Even after his PED suspension, Strange-Gordon continued to excel upon the basepaths and in the leadoff spot.

However, a trade to the Mariners prior to the 2018 season proved to be a disaster. Not only did he struggle in his conversion to center, but his production tanked as well. Strange-Gordon produced a disappointing .266/.293/.343 batting line in his 1091 plate appearances, hitting 30 doubles and stealing just 55 bases.

Although the Reds are considering Strange-Gordon to be a shortstop, it has been years since he received considerable time at the position. The Mariners primarily used him at second after their failed centerfield experiment, with Strange-Gordon making just 13 appearances at short over the past three seasons.

In the best case scenario, Strange-Gordon will be able to recapture his former glory and serve as a solid stopgap for the Reds at shortstop. Chances are, he would work best as a utility player, getting time at both middle infield positions and in the outfield. Strange-Gordon would certainly be valuable for the Reds in such a role.
