Derek Fisher has tantalized with his potential for years. Considered a top 100 prospect by MLB.com prior to the 2017 season, Fisher was expected to be a key part of the Astros lineup originally. He was then sent to the Blue Jays as part of the deal that sent Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini to Houston, as Toronto was hoping to unlock his talent.

Now Fisher is on his way to another organization. The Milwaukee Brewers are the latest team to take a chance on the former prospect, hoping that they can be the ones to unlock that potential.

Milwaukee Brewers hoping for success with Derek Fisher

The major leagues have been rough on Fisher. He has produced a .194/.286/.376 batting line in his 458 plate appearances, drawing 50 walks, but also striking out 164 times. He has displayed his power potential when making contact, belting 17 homers and 12 doubles, but he has not made enough contact for that to matter.

However, Fisher has had better luck in AAA. In 1053 plate appearances in the highest level of the minors, he has produced a .289/.379/.520 batting line, hitting 50 homers and 55 doubles while stealing 40 bases. He seemingly has nothing left to prove in the minors.

Fisher does have a few things going for him as he attempts to stick in the majors. He is out of options, so the Brewers would need to keep him on the roster or risk exposing him to waivers. He can also play all three outfield positions, potentially making him a valuable piece off the bench.

The problem is that the Brewers already have a crowded outfield situation. The trio of Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain, and Avisail Garcia are locked into starting roles. Fisher now has to contend with five other players capable of playing in the outfield for a role on the Opening Day roster.

The Milwaukee Brewers are the latest team to take a chance on Derek Fisher. Maybe they will be the ones to unlock his potential.
