Since David Wright retired, Jacob deGrom has been the face of the New York Mets. While Noah Syndergaard may have a larger social media presence and have a larger share of the spotlight, but there is no questioning what deGrom means to the organization. He simply goes out every fifth day and dominates, having established himself as one of the best pitchers in the game.

deGrom also has his sights set on being like Wright in another way. He has stated that he has no intention of leaving the Mets, and wants to be a lifelong member of the franchise.

Jacob deGrom: New York Mets star for life?

There are some obstacles to deGrom fulfilling his wish. Not only does he have that aforementioned opt-out following the 2022 campaign, but the Mets have a team option for 2024 that is worth $32.5 million. As he will be 36 years old for that season, the Mets may not be so inclined to pay that much for an aging pitcher.

However, there is no questioning what deGrom has meant to the Mets since his debut in 2014. He won the NL Rookie of the Year award that season, has been a part of three All Star Games, and won consecutive NL Cy Young awards in 2018 and 2019. Even as he enters his age 33 campaign, he still appears to be going strong.

deGrom has become the undisputed ace of the Mets staff. While his lifetime numbers have been solid, he has been on another level over the past three seasons. Since the start of 2018, he has posted a 2.10 ERA and a 0.943 WHiP over his 489 innings, striking out 628 batters with only 108 walks.

But past performance is no indication of how the future will transpire. If deGrom can continue to pitch at even his career rates, there is no question that the Mets and Steve Cohen will open the vaults to keep him in town. However, that is a large if.
