For the most part, each team knows what their roster will look like for the coming year. There may be a few free agents signed as teams look to fill gaps on their bench or as injury replacements, but for the most part, teams are done shopping. And then there are the Colorado Rockies, who never actually started.

Every single team has spent guaranteed money on free agents this offseason. This includes the A’s, who infamously told player representatives that they did not have any money to spend. That is, every single team except the Rockies, who have absolutely zero guaranteed money to any free agents.

But the Colorado Rockies somehow feel they can compete

This does not mean that the Rockies have not been active. They did sign some players to minor league deals. After all, the likes of C.J. Cron, Greg Bird, and Chris Owings are exactly what this team needed to push them over the top after posting a 26-34 record last year.

More Rockies. A long list of free agency disasters. light

But the Rockies were active on the trade front! They sent superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado, possibly the best third baseman in the game, to the St. Louis Cardinals for a disappointing package of prospects. This came after the general manager had angered Arenado by attempting to trade him in the previous offseason without speaking to him.

Nonetheless, the Rockies feel they can compete. Let us ignore that the Padres and Dodgers have gotten much better while the Rockies are worse. Let us ignore free agency, and shun those players that can help the roster while signing Jose Briceno.

After all, this roster was good enough to compete last year, right? Removing their best player from the equation is fine. As is sitting out free agency, and refusing to go after any upgrades. Let those other teams spend money – the Rockies have a plan.

And maybe one day, the Colorado Rockies will figure out what that plan is. For now, they are the only team not to have spent any guaranteed money in free agency this offseason.
