Pittsburgh Pirates add key depth in Todd Frazier
In theory, the Pittsburgh Pirates are set on the corners of their infield for the next few years. Colin Moran finally had that breakout season that the team had been waiting for, and with Josh Bell having been sent to Washington, is now the Pirates’ undisputed first baseman. Ke’Bryan Hayes appeared to be a star in the making at third, and could be a cornerstone for the franchise.
However, injuries happen. As optimistic as the Pirates may be about the corners of their infield, depth can make a difference. With that in mind, Pittsburgh has inked Todd Frazier to a minor league contract.
Pittsburgh Pirates could have bargain in Todd Frazier
At 35 years old, Frazier is not the player he once was. He struggled in 2020, posting a .236/.302/.382 batting line in 172 plate appearances between the Rangers and Mets. Frazier still showed a bit of pop, with four homers and nine doubles, but that was not enough to generate interest for a guaranteed contract.
It is reasonable that the Pirates can have hope that Frazier could return to being a productive player. While he may not be that player, Frazier did hit 21 homers and posted a 105 OPS+ in 2019. It is possible that with a regular spring training and a degree of normality during the season, he can be a productive option off of the bench.
These are also the types of signings that the Pirates should be looking to make. Frazier is obviously not going to be a part of the long term solution, but he could get the team closer. If he plays well over the first few months, Pittsburgh may be able to land a prospect or two from a team looking to upgrade their bench.
Even if Frazier struggles, there is no risk in this signing. The Pirates are not on the hook for much, if any, money should he fail to make the roster out of spring training. It is the perfect low risk, high possible reward lottery ticket.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Todd Frazier to a minor league deal. Even if he is not the player he was, Frazier can still be a useful piece for the roster.
