The Colorado Rockies are having an utterly horrendous offseason. They went through the offseason without signing a single player to a major league contract, something that has been the case since the end of 2018. Nolan Arenado was sent to the Cardinals after their general manager was able to alienate the superstar, and then got a thoroughly mediocre return.

With star shortstop Trevor Story in his final season before free agency, surely the Rockies would learn from their mistakes. Instead, the front office has yet to engage him in discussions about an extension.

Colorado Rockies cannot learn from past mistakes

Albert Einstein is widely credited with stating that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. Although it is debatable as to whether or not he actually said those words, the premise rings true in Colorado.

light. More Rockies. A reserved approach to the offseason

Extending Story would erase some of the ill-will from this offseason. The $164 million that they saved in the Arenado trade could be used to lock in the prized shortstop and to further improve the roster during the next offseason. But that would involve the Rockies having a competent front office, something that has not been the case.

It is entirely possible that an extension comes together. While the two sides have not talked at this point, that does not preclude them from doing so in the coming days or weeks. Extensions do take time, especially ones that will have the financial ramifications that Story’s would likely possess.

But the idea that the two sides have yet to actually begin to have those conversations has to be concerning. Story will be one of the more coveted free agents on the market, and given the extension given to Fernando Tatis Jr., his price tag is not going to be dropping in the near future. It may be now or never for an extension to take place.

The Colorado Rockies and Trevor Story have yet to discuss an extension. The Rockies’ front office is a perfect example of how not to treat one’s stars.
