Spring training is always an interesting time. The rules are more relaxed, allowing players to have more fun than they normally would during the grind of the regular season. It is a place to try out new things. New York Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier took full advantage of that opportunity during batting practice on Friday as he debuted a new bat.

This bat was designed to look exactly like him, from the red hair to his sunglasses and mask. Only a picture can do it justice.

There are obvious issues with attempting to put one’s likeness on the bat. While the image could be recognized as Frazier, it could also be Beaker from the Muppets. Hair is sort of difficult to replicate on a cylindrical object.

For his part, Frazier was pleased with his new lumber. In fact, he said that he would love to use it during a game, although that may be impossible. Aside from the potential issues with fielders picking the ball up off of the bat, Major League Baseball is not exactly a league that allows fun.

It is also a missed opportunity for the league. MLB has been adamant that it is not their responsibility to market their players, but they go out of their way to stop players from customizing their cleats or gloves beyond narrow parameters. These customized bats, even if they are only used in batting practice, can help the sport grow.

But it is a matter of allowing their usage, and for other players to jump on board. Frazier has been more of a free spirit so such an idea would be natural. Hopefully, other players will jump on board as well.
