When last we saw Sam Dyson, the former Texas Rangers closer was struggling to find his way. He had been acquired by the Minnesota Twins at the 2019 trade deadline with the hopes that he would help solidify their bullpen. Instead, Dyson imploded, as that trade was a disaster.

His problems were only just beginning. Major League Baseball began investigating Dyson for mentally and physically abusing his former girlfriend during their relationship. On Friday, his punishment was handed down, as Dyson will be suspended for the entire 2021 season.

The investigation began due to posts that Dyson’s ex-girlfriend, Alexis Blackburn, had posted on Instagram back in November 2019. In those posts, she detailed her experience with law enforcement and how the situations were handled, especially given Dyson’s status as a professional athlete.

One could understand if Blackburn would be skeptical about any investigations, even though she co-operated with MLB. Police had intervened in a situation during that same month, where Dyson had admitted that the couple were in a “verbally violent and toxic relationship.” Even with that statement, authorities determined that there was not any probable cause for Dyson to be charged.

But MLB is not subject to the same stipulations as the local authorities. Based on their investigation, Dyson violated the terms of their domestic abuse policy. Not only is he suspended for the entire upcoming season, but he must also participate in a comprehensive and confidential evaluation and treatment program before he will be reinstated.

This may also mark the end of Dyson’s career. He will be 33 years old when his suspension comes to an end, with two years away from the game. His time with the Twins was a disaster, which is the last impression that he made on the diamond. Add in this suspension and it is difficult to imagine that any team would be willing to take much of a chance on him going forward.
