It is difficult to call Odubel Herrera a forgotten man. The Philadelphia Phillies outfielder certainly earned the ire of the fanbase, both with his lack of production after receiving a long term extension and his domestic violence suspension. When he was outrighted off of the 40 man roster, it appeared as though the team simply hoped he would go away.

The Phillies now find themselves in a situation where they do not have a clear answer in center. Scott Kingery, Adam Haseley, and Roman Quinn are viewed as the most likely options for the position, but there are other possibilities. Former first overall pick Mickey Moniak is in camp, looking to prove that he was worthy of that selection. And then there is Herrera.

Herrera has played just two games since May 26, 2019, with both coming in the Dominican Winter League this past offseason. However, he is off to a hot start in spring training, with three hits, including a home run, in his six plate appearances. He has even stolen a base, an aspect of his game that had virtually disappeared.

2021 is an important year for Herrera. This is the final guaranteed year of his extension, as the Phillies hold 2022 and 2023. It is highly unlikely that they pick those options up, instead paying a $2.5 million buyout to send him away.

Herrera is essentially playing for his future. He had been the Phillies’ answer in center before his suspension in 2019, something he is no longer considered. He has a very long way to go before he can regain the organization’s trust, if he can ever do so.

But Herrera can force their hand. If he performs well in spring training, he could end up back on the Phillies 40 man roster. He may even be able to reclaim center, a position that once been his. Herrera has to fight to even be a part of the conversation, but thus far, he is doing exactly what he needed to.
