It was just over a year ago that Tony Fernandez had passed away. His loss left a major void in the Toronto Blue Jays family, as he was one of the stars of their glory days in the 1980s and into the 1990s. His charitable works, and his impact on the Blue Jays, will not be forgotten.

Fernandez finds himself in the news once again for a different reason. His former residence in the Dominican Republic was robbed by two men before they ended up destroying the house.

The robbers took numerous items that had significance from his career. His ring from the 1993 World Series was stolen, as were his five All Star rings. One of the robbers can be seen leaving while wearing one of Fernadez jerseys from his time with the Mets.

Fernandez is a legend in both the Dominican Republic and amongst Blue Jays fans. He had four different stints in Toronto over his 17 year career, spending at least parts of 12 seasons with the Blue Jays. He remains the team leader in games, hits, and triples. While his number has not been retired, Fernandez is one of ten players, executives, and broadcasters to be so honored.

A five time All Star and four time Gold Glove winner, Fernandez had an excellent career. He posted a lifetime .288/.347/.399 batting line in his 8793 plate appearances, hitting 414 doubles and 92 triples while stealing 246 bases. Fernandez finished eighth in the 1987 AL MVP vote, earning votes in four different years.

His legacy, both on the island and in Toronto, has been secure for decades. He was a beloved figure, making the robbery and destruction of his former house all the more revolting. Hopefully, the perpetrators will be caught, and those momentos can be returned to his family.
