Diehard Yankees fan LeBron James becomes part owner of Red Sox
By David Hill
As a noted Yankees fan, one would assume that LeBron James would want nothing to do with the Boston Red Sox. They are the biggest rival after all, the constant thorn in the Yankees’ side over the years. However, he also knows a business opportunity when he sees one.
In the end, that business sense won out over his fandom. James, and his partner Maverick Carter, are set to join Fenway Sports Group as business partners.
LeBron James to become part owner of Boston Red Sox
This would make James and Carter more than just part owners of the Red Sox. They would be a part of the entire package, including NESN and Roush Fenway Racing. James and Carter are also the first two black partners of this group.
There is a degree of familiarity between the two sides already. James had used Fenway Sports Marketing, of which he would now be a co-owner as well, for over a decade. That partnership has been involved in various marketing and sponsorship deals over the years. James also owns 2% of the Liverpool soccer team, setting the stage for this partnership to expand.
The partnership between James, Carter, and Fenway Sports Group still needs to be approved by Major League Baseball, a process that could take months. However, this is a move that could pay off down the line, with James being one of the more recognizable and influential athletes in the world. His presence could help attract top talent to the various sports franchises, as well as any future teams that the group purchases.
James also brings an interesting dynamic to the group. He is not exactly loved in Boston, both for his Yankees fandom and run of success in the NBA. He had become one of the great sports villains in the region, a player that the fanbase loved to hate. Now, he is set to become a part owner of the beloved Red Sox.
LeBron James may need to change his rooting interest, as the noted Yankees fan is set to become a part owner of the Boston Red Sox.
