Major league players can tell when a player is ready to take that final step and join the show. The Padres knew in 2019 that Fernando Tatis Jr. was ready, lobbying the front office to make him part of the Opening Day roster. The Kansas City Royals find themselves in a similar situation with Bobby Witt Jr.

As the Royals are looking to contend in 2021, they will need to have the best players possible at every position. The clubhouse feels that Witt is one of those players, pushing for him to be a part of the Opening Day roster.

Bobby Witt Jr. is ready to debut with Kansas City Royals

Based on his performance in spring training, it would be difficult to justify sending Witt to the minors. He has produced a .333/.379/667 batting line in his 29 plate appearances, hitting three homers. His bat has certainly stood out thus far.

But there is more than how he has performed with the lumber. Witt has done the little things that may not stand out in the box score, such as scoring from second on an infield error or drawing a 12 pitch walk. Seemingly every game, he has done something that has stood out to his peers and coaches.

The biggest question is Witt’s relative lack of professional experience. He has 180 minor league plate appearances under his belt, all of which came in the Arizona League in 2019. The Royals could easily use that lack of experience to justify sending Witt down to the minors and delaying his arbitration clock.

But the Royals appear to be ready to come out of their rebuild. They were surprisingly active this offseason, making moves designed to win now. Plugging Witt in at second, despite his inexperience, would be an upgrade over Nicky Lopez. Anything that would make the roster better would help in the Royals’ quest to contend, and that includes bringing Witt to the majors.
