There has not been much talk around Ryan Braun this offseason, and for good reason. The former Milwaukee Brewers outfielder had said that he was not overly interested in continuing his career, indicating that he was done. While he has not said he is retired, Braun had essentially said everything but.
If Braun does come back, it will only be for one team. He has stated that he cannot foresee playing for a franchise other than the Brewers.
Milwaukee Brewers or bust for Ryan Braun
While Braun may not have used those specific words, it is easy to read between the lines. He has also said that while he is working out and staying in shape, he has not picked up a bat or ball since the offseason began. That would seemingly indicate that he’s done.
If he is waiting for a call from the Brewers, the phone may never ring. Milwaukee has a crowded outfield, especially after signing Jackie Bradley Jr. Although Braun could hypothetically play first, the Brewers have moved former top prospect Keston Hiura to the position. Even if the universal designated hitter is implemented for 2021, something that still has not yet been decided, Dan Vogelbach could fill that role.
Braun leaves behind a very good, albeit controversial, career. There is no disputing the numbers he produced, as he posted a solid .296/.358/.532 batting line with 352 homers and 408 doubles while stealing 216 bases. He was the 2007 NL Rookie of the Year and the 2011 NL MVP, a six time All Star and five time Silver Slugger.
But he will also be remembered for his PED usage. He had tested positive for PED use due to an abnormally high testosterone level. However, Braun appealed his 50 game ban, with the suspension eventually being reversed due to the proper protocols not being followed with taking and storing the sample.
That would end up being a brief reprieve. He was suspended for 65 games in 2013 due to his part in the Biogenesis scandal. This time, he did not appeal and admitted fault, eventually apologizing to the person that took his ‘tainted’ sample back in 2011. Although that incident is largely forgotten these days, his overall career has to be viewed with a degree of skepticism.
Ryan Braun is waiting on the Milwaukee Brewers to call if he is going to continue his career. He may be in for a long wait.
