Little was expected from Jay Bruce when he signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees. He was essentially a depth piece, capable of absorbing innings in the outfield and first base to alleviate some of the wear and tear from their starters. While he had an opt-out clause where he had to be placed on the 40 man roster by March 25, Bruce would have served his purpose by that point as long as the regulars stay healthy.

However, Bruce has been surprisingly useful this spring. Heading into Friday, he had produced a .261/.320/.565 batting line in 25 plate appearances, hitting two homers and a double. That performance has forced the Yankees’ hand, making it difficult to imagine that he would be released at this point.

Jay Bruce resurrecting career with New York Yankees

This production is a pleasant surprise for New York. Bruce had gone from being a feared slugger and an All Star candidate to a faded talent, injuries having sapped his ability with the bat. Although the power was still there, Bruce just did not make the same type of contact.

Since the start of 2018, Bruce had produced a .217/.282/.448 batting line in his 797 plate appearances. He did manage to belt 41 homers and 39 doubles, but the hits were few and far between. Although he was still a solid defensive player at both corner outfield spots and first base, he did not hit enough to warrant a place in the lineup.

But Bruce is healthy now. He provides valuable depth in the outfield and at first base, areas where the Yankees have had numerous injury concerns over the years. Bruce is also a left handed power hitter, something that not only plays up at Yankee Stadium but is also needed in their very right handed lineup.

Even if the Yankees do not have a spot for Bruce on the roster, they may be able to get something for him. With the way he has produced, he could help several teams looking for a lefty bat off the bench, especially given his defensive versatility. But at this point, it would be a surprise to see Bruce playing anywhere else on Opening Day.

Jay Bruce is going to force the New York Yankees to make a decision on his future. At this point, it is not a hard decision to make.
