The clock is ticking for the New York Mets. They have several players that they would like to extend, with trade acquisition Francisco Lindor as the biggest potential free agent on their list. However, Lindor has set a deadline of Opening Day for any talks, and that is fast approaching.

Considering the type of player that Lindor is, and that deadline, it is not a surprise that the Mets would focus on getting a deal done. According to reports, the entire focus of the front office is to lock Lindor into place.

Francisco Lindor extension key to New York Mets future

Ideally, the Mets would be able to lock in Michael Conforto and Noah Syndergaard as well. However, as Jon Heyman noted, there is no traction for a deal with Conforto. Syndergaard is far trickier as he is coming off of Tommy John surgery and has not pitched since 2019.

This makes Lindor the focal point for the next few days. A four time All Star and two time Gold Glove winner, Lindor is an impressive five tool talent at short. He has produced a .285/.346/.488 batting line with 138 homers, 191 doubles, and 99 steals in his 3510 plate appearances as he has emerged as one of the best shortstops in the game.

As he has just turned 27 years old this past November, he is entering his hypothetical prime. The Mets could, if they are able to work out a deal, have Lindor throughout those prime years. He would be the perfect player to build their lineup around as they look to build a championship franchise in New York.

But it is a matter of coming to an agreement before time runs out. Each minute brings us closer to Opening Day, and an end to those talks. Lindor will focus on the season, worrying about free agency when the time comes. The Mets, meanwhile, could bring him back, but will be attempting to fend off several other suitors for his services.

The New York Mets focus is on extending Francisco Lindor. Given his track record and how he is about to enter his prime, that should be the case.
