Randy Arozarena burst onto the scene during the 2020 postseason. Although he is still technically a rookie, he essentially was the Tampa Bay Rays offense at times, including in the World Series. He set numerous postseason records, both for a rookie and overall. Arozarena was a one man wrecking machine, even if it was not enough to bring a championship to Tampa Bay.

It is understandable that the Rays would look to keep Arozarena around as long as possible. According to reports, they are already discussing a possible long term extension.

Randy Arozarena could be the next face of the Tampa Bay Rays

Arozarena has displayed the potential to be the next superstar for the Rays, albeit in a limited sample size. He has posted a .286/.384/.607 batting line in his 99 plate appearances over the past two seasons, with eight homers and six steals. Add in his ability to potentially play any spot in the outfield, and it is understandable why the Rays would want to keep him in town.

Extending Arozarena now does carry a degree of risk. For as well as he had performed in the postseason and in his limited time in the majors, there is a chance that he will struggle once pitchers figure him out, not to mention the off the field issues this offseason. At the same time, if he does emerge as a superstar in waiting, the Rays could lock him in at a discounted rate.

This is an extension that the Rays have to pursue. For all of their success, they are a relatively anonymous collection of players, especially after trading Blake Snell. As the Rays look to draw fans to the ballpark and generate interest, they need that player they can build around as the face of the franchise.

That could easily be Arozarena. He captivated the baseball universe during the playoffs, to the point where a movie is being discussed based on his life story. Keeping a player with that type of recognition could pay off in the long term for Tampa Bay. But they have to get an agreement in place first.
