The Los Angeles Angels have been attempting to lock their core into place for the long term. Anthony Rendon was signed to a long term deal as a free agent, and Mike Trout signed a 12 year extension. As they look to build a contender, the Angels are looking to find those pieces that can be a part of that future.

They made another move lock in their core. David Fletcher has been signed to a five year, $26 million extension with two team options.

Fletcher has been an important part of their roster, spending time at second, third, and short. With Rendon at the hot corner and Jose Iglesias at short, Fletcher has emerged as the Angels’ second baseman.

light. More Angels. Trout might get even better

This extension is a calculated gamble for Los Angeles. Fletcher would not have been eligible for arbitration until the end of this season and would not be a free agent until after the 2024 campaign. This deal provides cost certainty and would potentially buy out three years of free agency.

He had his best major league season in 2020, posting a 117 OPS+ with three homers and 13 doubles in his 230 plate appearances. He has also been solid defensively, saving 16 runs at third and another two runs at second over his three seasons in the majors.

Even if Fletcher does not remain as the Angels starting second baseman, his defensive versatility and excellent contact skills make him a valuable piece of the puzzle. At worst, he would be a super utility man, especially given his ability to play either outfield corner.
