On Friday, Major League Baseball took the unprecedented of removing the All Star Game from Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves. This move came on the heels of corporate pressure to change the location of the game and festivities in the wake of Georgia signing a bill that restricted voting access in the state.

Understandably, the Braves were not pleased with this decision. They posted a press release on Twitter to air their grievances.

Over the years, Major League Baseball has attempted to portray themselves in a different light. They have been honoring Jackie Robinson with his own day and by retiring his number 42 across the game. The league has gone out of its way to support initiatives to promote racial equality. To ignore that bill and keep the game and festivities in Georgia would have been hypocritical.

One can understand that the Braves organization is upset about losing the game. The revenue from the festivities would have been beneficial to everyone in the area. But to direct that anger and annoyance at the league for taking a stand over what they feel is right is a joke.

Frankly, the cognitive dissonance for the organization is astonishing. The Braves moniker has come under scrutiny as a racist throwback and may need to be changed. In fact, the only reason why the Braves even moved to Atlanta is because the city agreed to integrate seating at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium – in 1965.

It is also interesting to note that the Braves have had virtually nothing to say about the bill passed by the state’s legislature. Instead, they are directing their outrage at a league that is attempting to be inclusive, and refusing to give additional perks to a state that they feel holds different values.
