New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard is just like every other baseball fan. He wants to be able to sit back, maybe crack open a cold one, and watch his favorite team play. In his case, watching the Mets is more than a way to relax; it is a way to scout opponents and mentally prepare as he continues to work his way back to the mound.

However, Syndergaard was unable to do that, as Major League Baseball’s ridiculous blackout rules prevented him from watching the game. This left him with one other alternative – the Pirates game against the Cubs.

We all understand Syndergaard’s frustration with MLB’s blackout rules. For a league that is so concerned with growing the game and finding a way to appeal to new fans, backing out games in certain markets does not help at all.

However, his comments on the Pittsburgh Pirates were certainly interesting. It is one thing for a fan or someone that is not in the game to think that a team is terrible, but it is something else entirely when the players have that perception.

Even then, players usually find something positive to say. In the case of the Pirates, one could talk about how Bryan Reynolds is a viable major league outfielder, or how Colin Moran has been hitting the ball as hard as anyone in the league. And that is really about it, since Ke’Bryan Hayes is on the Injured List and the Pirated roster does not exactly have a lot of talent. Syndergaard certainly is not wrong in his assessment.

While the worst teams in most sports fail to compete, baseball is a different animal. The worst teams usually win around two out of every five games, a rate that would almost be respectable in other leagues. Any team can win on any given day, even with the best pitchers on the mound. Should Pittsburgh get to face Syndergaard this season, they have extra motivation.

The prospect of facing the Pirates is not a concern to Noah Syndergaard. The New York Mets pitcher made his thoughts clear when he had to watch their game.
