New York Mets: Jacob deGrom takes historic loss on Saturday
The New York Mets inability to score runs for Jacob deGrom is almost comical at this point. It does not seem to matter who they face; so long as deGrom is on the mound, the offense will be outright offensive.
That came to a head on Saturday. deGrom was his usual dominant self on the mound, allowing one run on five hits without a walk, striking out 14 batters. However, he took what was a historic loss for his efforts.

deGrom made just one mistake, if it could be called one. Jazz Chisholm belted his 0-2 100+ MPH up and away fastball for a home run, the first time a 100+ MPH pitch out of the zone had been taken deep in nearly a decade. It is hard to blame deGrom for that pitch.
It also shows how fine a line that deGrom has to walk whenever he is on the mound. Consider that he has allowed just one run on eight hits and two walks in 14 innings this year, striking out 21 batters, yet the Mets are 0-2 in those outings.
To be fair, the Mets’ offense has been a disaster all season. deGrom has the fourth most hits of any player on the Mets with a grand total of three. Their 16 runs scored is 29th in the majors, just ahead of the Nationals, who have played one fewer game at the time this is being typed. The fact that the Mets are 2-3 is a borderline miracle.
But, of course, 13 of those runs came when deGrom was not on the mound. The one game he received anything that sort of resembled run support ended in another predictable way, as the Mets’ bullpen imploded to cost him a victory. It is just another turn in the rotation for deGrom, where his brilliance did not result in a victory.
Jacob deGrom made history with his outing for the New York Mets on Saturday. It just was not the type of history he wanted to make.
