This has not been a great week for Michael Conforto. The New York Mets outfielder earned the wrath of both teams broadcasters when he stuck his elbow out over the plate to draw a game ending hit by pitch. That moment was actually amongst the highlights of his week, as he has begun the season in a dreadful slump.

None of that matters to Mets fans. Conforto has become the target of their ire, the poster boy for the struggles of their offense to start the year.

It is easy to understand why Conforto would have been booed. Jacob deGrom had another masterful performance on the mound, and the Mets offense was unable to provide any run support yet again. This has to be frustrating for everyone involved.

Conforto has also been in a miserable slump to begin the season. He has just three hits in his 24 plate appearances this season, with one double and three RBI. He has struggled to make contact, with eight strikeouts and just one walk. The Mets, and their fans, certainly expected far more.

Given his track record, that will happen. He has been an important part of the Mets’ lineup, posting a .265/.369/.495 batting line in his 1959 plate appearances over the past four seasons. In that time, he has hit 97 homers and 86 doubles. When he has been on the diamond, Conforto has been a key part of their success.

Had this streak occurred in the middle of the season, it would not attract nearly as much attention. However, as it is the beginning of the season, and the Mets’ offensive woes have come under the spotlight, Conforto’s struggles have taken on a life of their own.
