Philadelphia Phillies have a problem in center field
Back on April 9, Roman Quinn led off the top of the eighth inning with a base hit to left center. The Philadelphia Phillies center fielder ended up being stranded on second in what was to become a 7-1 loss to the Braves. At the time, it seemed to be nothing more than a brief moment in a relatively one sided contest, nothing to really take note of.
What no one could have possibly known at the time is that this would be the last base hit by a Phillies’ center fielder in 2021. No matter who has been given the opportunity, their bats have gone silent.
Philadelphia Phillies center fielders have vanished offensively
It is not as though the Phillies had gotten any offense from center field before April 9 either. Heading into Sunday, Phillies center fielders have combined for three hits in 48 plate appearances. They have drawn three walks, scored three runs, and stolen two bases, but have also struck out 13 times.
As a comparison, take a look at Zack Wheeler. He has two hits this year, including a double. That double is one more extra base hit than the Phillies have received from the players that have appeared at center this season. But, you know, let’s keep pitchers from hitting…
It is not as though the cupboard was bare in center. Adam Haseley had four hits in his 21 plate appearances as he moved around the outfield before leaving the team due to personal reasons. However, Quinn and Mickey Moniak have combined for one hit on the season regardless of where they have played.
Eventually, the hits will come. The Phillies cannot be that atrocious in center all season. Either Quinn and/or Moniak will start to perform, or the team will be forced to give Odubel Herrera another look. A trade could happen as Philadelphia desperately tries to find any production from the position. Something will eventually change.
The Philadelphia Phillies have had three hits from their center fielders this season. It is time that they do something to shake up the roster.
