For most people, not being arrested is hardly something to brag about. It is the bare minimum expected to be a member of society, that one is not going to be doing something to cause law enforcement to get involved. But someone forgot to tell former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra about that part of the social contract.

Shortly after midnight on Friday morning, Dykstra bragged that he had not been arrested for 35 months. Somehow, this was meant to show his respect for law enforcement or something.

Philadelphia Phillies star Lenny Dykstra sets an incredibly low bar

There is a very low bar when it comes to Dykstra. After all, this is the man who cannot be libeled, with the courts saying that his reputation is so repugnant that his reputation is beyond redemption. His history of racist behavior, misogyny, homophobia, and criminal actions, as well as his own autobiography, painted the portrait of a man who was incapable of staying out of trouble.

light. More Phillies. How will Girardi handle current mess?

His criminal history is extensive. Dykstra has been arrested for embezzlement, car theft, drug charges, indecent exposure, and money laundering, amongst other assorted charges. He has spent years in prison due to those actions, the days when he had been adored by the Phillies’ fanbase far in the past.

It did not need to be this way. Dykstra was a beloved figure in Philadelphia, a player known affectionately as ‘Nails’ due to his toughness and hardnosed play. He was a three time All Star, leading the National League twice in hits, and finishing second in the 1993 NL MVP vote. But he just could not stop himself.

Maybe that hearing, when his libel suit against former teammate Ron Darling was thrown out, was a wakeup call. Maybe now, Dykstra has gotten his life together, his criminal history ready to be a part of the past. At least, one can hope that he has turned over a new leaf.
