One has to give Bartolo Colon credit. At 48 years old, an age when most former major leaguers are enjoying their retirement, he is still out there grinding. The former New York Mets starter is determined to return to the majors for one more year, signing with the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican League as he looks to work his way back.

Colon had about as good of a debut as he could have. He fired three shutout innings, striking out two while allowing just two hits. His solid command was on display as Colon did not walk a batter during his outing.

Bartolo Colon hopes to return to New York Mets

While it is hard to be excited about three innings, that outing is a stark departure from Colon’s last two seasons in the majors. An All Star in 2016, he struggled once he left the Mets, posting a combined 14-26 record with a 6.13 ERA and a 1.465 WHiP in his final 289.1 major league innings. With his age and struggles, it was not a surprise that he was unable to find any suitors.

However, that has not dissuaded Colon from continuing to pursue a major league opportunity. He has often stated his desire for one more major league season, preferring to retire as a member of the Mets. While the Mets may not need the pitching help now, the questionable health of their pitching staff at the best of times could lead to desperate circumstances.

As unlikely as a return stateside may be, it is in Colon’s hands. Should he continue to pitch well for Monclova, he may well be able to grab the attention of a major league team. While a major league contract might not be in the offering, he could get a minor league deal with an eye to returning to the majors.
