Cleveland Indians have emerging star in Franmil Reyes
To say that the Cleveland Indians‘ offense is anemic would be a bit of an understatement. Only three players on the roster have an OPS+ over 80, helping to explain why the Indians rank 14th in the American League in runs scored. If Cleveland is going to contend this season, it will be due to their pitching staff.
However, there is talent in the lineup. While Jose Ramirez may grab majority of the attention, there is another player who is emerging as a potential star. Franmil Reyes has developed into a centerpiece of the lineup.
Cleveland Indians have emerging star in Franmil Reyes
Reyes has been the Indians’ second best hitter this season, providing a formidable duo with Ramirez. He has produced a .279/.308/.616 batting line in his 91 plate appearances this season, belting seven homers and four doubles.
His numbers over the past 162 games bear witness to the type of player that he is developing into. Over that 162 game span, Reyes has produced a .267/.330/.498 batting line, hitting 26 doubles and 34 homers. That is the type of production that the Indians desperately need in the middle of their lineup as they try to find viable options with the bat.
There are some concerns with Reyes. He has struck out in 33% of his plate appearances this season while posting a mere 3.3% walk rate. Both rates are worse than his career norms, but they both bear watching this season. Should those rates return to his averages, Reyes may get even better this season.
Reyes will turn 26 during the middle of the season and is just approaching his hypothetical prime. If his performance thus far is any indication, he is just starting to become a player that can make a major difference in any lineup, not just in Cleveland.
The Cleveland Indians may have an emerging star in their lineup. Franmil Reyes has been impressive this year, and he could get even better.
